| Location |
The ancient kingdom of Aquitaine is here to discover. To the west you will find the great vineyards of Bordeaux or the Atlantic beaches of the Landes. To the east is the old city of Cahors and its vineyards along the river valley. Or south, to the lively city of Toulouse and on through the heart of Gascony to the foothills of the Pyrénees and the Basque country. It is an area rich in history and the region is dotted with many bastide's, medieval, fortified hilltop towns and villages, which have changed little, yet are still living communities that burst into life on market days with stalls filled with fresh local produce and flowers. They are the legacy of wars and feudal disputes over the centuries, which ended with the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry Plantaganet, at whose court the music and poetry of the troubadours flourished. Around us is fertile green and wooded farming country producing plums, apples, strawberries and melons amongst the odd field of sunflowers and vines. Spring comes early with warm days and cherry blossom, (pick as many as you can eat). In summer life moves slowly, interrupted only by the noonday siesta and lasts well into September and often beyond, slowly turning to autumn when it is time to harvest the walnuts. There are many walks nearby, and this is excellent cycling country taking you deep into the hills with views across valleys reminiscent of Tuscany. The people here are warm and friendly and it is impossible to go out and not stumble across a flower festival, a village market groaning with local delicacies, a farm selling its own produce, or a country antique market. And of course there is the food. This region of France is famous for its duck and geese, of which foie gras and magret de canard are some of the great dishes of Gascony. Within ten kilometres of us there are many restaurants ranging from small family run ones, to gastronomic. Then there are the fine brandies of Armagnac, distilled and aged in the same way for centuries and the wines of Bergerac, Buzet, Cahors and Bordeaux. Our local village of Casseneuil is about half a mile (1km) away. Medieval in its origins, it has a 15th century church, which has fine frescoes, and old half -timbered (colombe) houses perched on the ramparts overlooking the river. It has a good butcher, several bread shops, a small supermarket, pharmacy, post office and a garage. There is a small market on Wednesday mornings and a good family run bar restaurant in the little hilltop village of St. Pastour, 4km away. The main town of this area is Villeneuve-sur-Lot. A busy market town sitting astride the river about 6 miles (10k) away, it has good shopping, lots of restaurants, a large farmers market in the centre on Tuesday and Saturday mornings and two big supermarkets on the outskirts. |
