| Summary |
The Mas de L'Elze is a rambling collection of old stone buildings, clinging to a sun-drenched, south facing slope on the edge of the Ardechois Cevennes. In the past, these buildings served a multitude of purposes typical of the local countryside: a silk-worm loft, a drying and smoking area for chestnuts, a barn for storing hay and raising geese and ducks for the "gavage". Now, they have been painstakingly and lovingly transformed into a set of completely independent luxury houses, from which you can fully appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding countryside. We three dwellings to receive visitors. Two - La Clede and La Magnanerie - are small, open plan houses for 2/4 and 2/3 people respectively, while the third - La Grange, is a larger house which sleeps 6. All houses share a 15x5m shared swimming pool....so you don't even have to go to the rivers to find water! They also share a 5-person jacuzzi. The latest addition is a gym, complete with treadmill, cross-trainer, rower, bike, stepper and a multi-gym - so you can stay trim while eating and drinking to excess!!!! There is also wireless ADSL access in all gites. |

| Location |
The Mas de L'Elze is situated roughly halfway between Largentiere and Valgorge, some 30 kilometres south-west of Aubenas, in the Department of the Ardeche. It is easily reached by road, the main A6 (Autoroute de Soleil) being only 75 minutes away. Attractions and Activities ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The closest town to the Mas de L'Elze is Largentiere, dating back to medieval times, retaining its walls, gates and ancient winding cobbled streets. En route from there to Aubenas, you will find Balazuc, designated one of the most picturesque villages of France. The Tour de Brison, dominating the countryside to the south of L'Elze, has an interesting wartime history. The majestic gorges of the Ardeche, famous for their natural beauty, are a short drive away. Closer by are the valleys of the Beaume, Drobie and Chassezac, less well-known, but no less beautiful. The mountain range of the Tanargue forms a backdrop to the setting sun in the west. An unusual natural phenomenon to be found nearby is the Bois de Paiolive, a labyrinth of white rocks eroded into strange and fantastic shapes. You can enjoy the countryside while relaxing in the sun with a glass of local wine; alternatively, should you wish to get a little closer to nature, many opportunities for horse-riding, mountain-biking and hiking are available in the region. Canoeing is very popular and bathing (or fishing?) in the clear, cool local rivers is a pleasure not to be missed. Gastronomy ~~~~~~~~~~ The Ardeche is famous for its chestnuts. Privas, named "The World Capital of the Chestnut", is renowned for the production of chestnut puree and marrons glacees. You will find that this local produce forms the base of gateaux, cremes and even ice cream, as well as appearing in the form of stuffings and soups. A local speciality is the "caillette", a sort of meatball which also contains "blette", a vegetable whose leaves resemble spinach and whose stalk is not unlike celery. As you would expect from a country region, the production of cheese and charcuterie is common. Coucouron (blue) and Tomme are among the cheeses produced from cow's milk; in addition, many farms produce small quantities of goat's cheese. Unlike its neighbours of the Cotes du Rhone, the "Vivarais" Ardeche wine is not world-famous. It is nonetheless very drinkable! For example, the white Chardonnay is excellent as an aperitif or with white meats or fish, while the full-bodied Cabernet provides a fine accompaniment to game or red meat. |
