Larnagol & The Lot – amenities and places of interest
Larnagol is situated in the south east of the department of the Lot, close to its border with the Aveyron.
Cajarc and Limogne, both 20 minutes drive, offer regular local markets and a full range of shops and restaurants; to the east of Limogne is a regional park with lake and nature reserve.
The two principal towns of the Lot region are Figeac and Cahors, and just over the border in the Department of the Aveyron, Villefranche-de-Rouergue. All are within 40 minutes drive of Calvignac, and each, with its own distinctive architectural character, offer the full complement of culture and history, markets and music festivals, riverside locations and street-side cafes.
From the west of the region, with its rolling wooded hills and small streams, to the drama of the limestone cliff-lined river valleys in the east, the area offers a contrast of landscape. There are flat-bottomed riverboats that run from Bouzies through Cahors to Luzech, which allow you to witness the delights of this transition at leisure.
With its long-dated history, the area is rich in places of interest. The magnificently preserved medieval villages of St-Cirq-Lapopie and Rocamadour, the prehistoric cave paintings at Pech-Merle, the superb working museum of agricultural life at Cuzals, and the 13th century Château de Cénevières.
Those who enjoy pleasures of a gastronomic nature will not be disappointed. Many local restaurants offer food at reasonable prices. For the more rarefied palate, the regional delicacies of truffles and foie gras. The dark Cahors wine, with its own distinctive flavour, which is produced in the vineyards along the river plain, provides the perfect accompaniment to the local cuisine.
Many leisure pursuits are available : walking and horse riding on the many designated trails, cycling around the peaceful villages, canoeing on the white water of the River Célé, and you can even water ski at the plan d’eau of Cajarc. For those wishing to take life at a slower pace, there are good bird watching opportunities, trout and fresh water fishing, and artists and photographers will find that they are spoilt for choice in subject matter.
In summary, whether you prefer to tour and explore, or if you simply wish to relax and unwind, this site offers a perfect location to experience true French country life in the Lot.
