| Location |
Les Chenes is in a lovely open woodland setting in a semi-rural elevated location 10mins downhill walk via an un-made woodland trail to the stunning village of La Roque-Gageac. 750m from the river Dordogne and 9kms from beautiful Sarlat, Les Chênes is perfectly situated for enjoying the wonderful attractions, wines and cuisine of Perigord and Quercy. Our guests may choose to relax around the property in the rural surroundings. Soak up the sun beside the secluded swimming pool or enjoy a shady spot and a favourite book in the courtyard garden. Table tennis will keep dad and the kids happy if they tire of the pool. For the more active, a host of outdoor activities and attractions are nearby. The village, set beneath overhanging cliffs in an outstanding setting on the banks of the river, is officially listed as 'one of the most beautiful villages in France'. Lanes and footpaths wind past yellow stone houses overlooking the Dordogne. Walk to the village (10 mins) for fresh bread/pastries from the baker (all year), and find local wines, regional delicacies, newspapers and fresh produce in the little village shop (seasonal). For dining on a terrace or a balcony overlooking the river, you can choose fine cuisine in an excellent restaurant or a more simple brasserie style meal. Meet the friendly locals in the bistro/bar and 'big Annie' sells you stamps in the tiny 'La Poste'. A local farmers' market is held every summer Friday morning. If you want to immerse yourself in 'La Vie Francaise' there are a number of outdoor village functions that visitors may attend such as the 'Village Fete' with fireworks, a BBQ & outdoor dancing in early august; an outdoor antiques market and of course, an outdoor dinner-dance to celebrate Independance Day on July 14th. In the village you can rent a canoe, play tennis, challenge the locals to boules, fish, soar aloft in a hot air balloon or relax on a river boat trip. Bring stout shoes/trainers and join marked walking trails 100m from the cottage for peaceful country walking. La Roque-Gageac is perfectly located for visiting all of the wonderful attractions of this stunning region. Close-by, visit numerous Chateaux, go horse-riding, shop in the colourful markets or dine on great local food in the stunning medieval town of Sarlat or explore the beautiful nearby villages of Domme, Beynac and Monpazier. We are located in the heart of the Perigord Noir, an area famous for fine traditional french cuisine (canard, fois gras, truffles, cepes, fresh walnuts)and wonderful fruity wines of world beating quality from nearby Bordeaux (St Emilion, St Estephe, Medoc, Graves, Pecharment) Bergerac (Monbazillac)and Cahors. For vineyard tours and wine tastings, 'vin de Domme' is only a short drive away, but of course there are numerous vineyards in the Bergerac region and world famous St Emilion and the rest of the Bordeaux Region are only slightly further afield. The local people are friendly, justly proud of their beautiful region and really do make an effort to welcome visitors. You will never be at a loss for something to do. Colin & Sue, your friendly hosts, strive to provide you with a peaceful, private and calm environment in which you can relax and unwind from your normal lives. We will always respect your privacy and we will be as discreet as possible when going about our essential chores. Naturally, we are always delighted to offer any help and advice our guests may require and to help you with your wine-tasting if you can't make up your mind which to buy! |
