Jasmin is just a short stroll from Mimi's village shop, where you can find all the basics, and Alan's home-farm where fresh eggs, chicken, rabbit (don't tell the kids though) and seasonal salads & veg' which can be purchased fresh from the ground. Fully refurbished to a very high standard in 2007, to provide all the comforts of home, whilst retaining many original features such as oak beams, wooden floors, exposed Charentaise stone walls & fireplace with woodburing stove. Jasmin is attractively and tastefully decorated, comfortably furnished and very well equipped to provide the perfect setting to unwind and enjoy the tranquil pace of village life. In the heart of sunflower country near Cognac, St Jean d'Angély, and within easy reach of the historic sites and beaches of the area, Fontaine Chalendray is a peaceful hilltop village, perfect for a relaxing holiday. Jasmin has a spacious dining kitchen with French doors to the terrace, with patio table, chairs, parasol, and the all important BBQ, just right for al-fresco dining. The kitchen is fully equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, fridge freezer, gas cooker & extractor, micro-wave and dining table and chairs. The large double aspect family sitting room overlooks the courtyard and garden. All beam work and stone walls have been exposed to give a cool and airy feel to this spacious family property. The comfortable sofa and armchairs surround the original Charentaise fireplace with wood burning stove perfect for a cosy evening. For entertainment the TV receives Sky free to air channels, there is also a DVD/CD player. The staircase leads to the first floor and the en-suite double bedroom with balcony and two twin bedrooms, all having plenty of storage space, and the family bathroom is also on this floor. THE GARDEN We are very proud of our large enclosed garden which is sectioned and completely secure, providing peace of mind for parents, and comprises: The Courtyard, which forms the main entry to the property with date palm and an ancient stone well. This is where you will bring your car for loading/unloading, we do ask that during your stay this area is kept free for guest use and cars parked roadside. The Main Garden which has the lawn, split level terracing and an array of plants and shrubs as well as fig, pomegranate and banana trees. The Pool is in its own walled and gated garden. The pool is oval shaped, 30 meters square (or should that be oval!) with proper stepped entry, and one meter deep throughout which makes it safe for young children to enjoy. It is banked to the rear and surrounded with terracing for basking in the sun. We have plenty of garden furniture, sun loungers and parasols available for your enjoyment, as well as table tennis, pool toys, lawn games and mini trampoline. The covers for the loungers and chairs are kept in the gites for you to take in and out as required. PETS: We do allow pets with restrictions, please contact us first to discuss it. If it is agreed that you can bring your pet, YOU MUST ENSURE that all pet passport requirements for your pets entry to France have been met. We will require proof of this BEFORE we will allow your pet into Chez Gabrielle. BABIES: We have cots & bedding, baby baths, stair gates, and high chairs available. Baby sitting can be arranged locally with advanced notice, and this is paid locally in euros's to the sitter. WELCOME PACKS: to your requirements can be waiting for you on arrival, allowing your holiday to start without a trek around a supermarket. Please let us know what you want and we will arrange it for you. AIRPORT COLLECTIONS: can be arranged if required at an additional cost. BICYCLE HIRE: Can be arranged with a local company delivered and collected from your gite, please let us know in advance so that we can arrange it for you. The bicycles come from a separate company who would invoice you directly. TOURIST INFORMATION, A folder is in each gite containing information about places to visit, country walks and market days etc. Should you have a specific interest please let us know and we will see what is available and where, and what costs are involved. |

Welcome to Cognac Country! This region is famous for sunshine, slippers (go figure) and Cognac - the ideal ingredients for a relaxing holiday. Summers here are long and hot.....normally!, springtime is warm and inviting, and autumns are lazy and golden. Touring is a pleasure on our quiet country roads edged with wild flowers, winding through sleepy villages, vineyards, and fields of sunflowers. All year round there are fairs and festivals all around the region The biggest outdoor bric-a-brac fair in France is held in Marsac every September, and the huge market at Roulliac held on the 27th of each month is an experience, and there are numerous smaller fairs all over the area. There are 2 good golf courses around 30-40 minutes drive from Chez Gabrielle at Cognac or Saintes. We are just over an hour from the wonderful west-coast beaches, making places like Royan, Ile d'Oleron and the chic Parisian haunt of Ile d'Re, an excellent day out. Both children and adults will enjoy a trip to the amazing Futuroscope near Poitiers or the amazing aquarium at La Rochelle. Dozens of cognac distilleries both large and small welcome visitors to see how this precious liquid is made, and to sample the finished product. If you have a sweet tooth we recommend a visit to the chocolate factory near Angouleme. Cycling - is a great way to appreciate the surrounding countryside, especially in the cool of Aulnay forest. There are the Charente and Boutonne rivers, and many lakes for fishing or swimming. Supermarket shopping is available in Matha or Aulnay (both a 15-minute drive away) and hypermarket shopping in the larger towns such as Cognac or St Jean d'Angeley. Dining: The closest restaurant is 4 kms away in the town of Nere, the Bistrot St.Pierre run by Michelle and Russell, offers excellent local cuisine, and amazing value which is complimented by a warm and friendly welcome in rustic French surroundings. About the same distance is the Auberge at Romaziers, or for a more chic dining experience try the Hotel de La Place in St Jean. There are literally dozens of restaurants from 5 - 30 minutes from Chez Gabrielle with prices from 11-26€ for a 3-course meal, ranging from family-run ferme-auberges to Michelin stared restaurants. You can even enjoy a leisurely lunch as you cruise down the Charente on a riverboat. Local specialties include excellent seafood, Charentaise melon with Pineau, fois gras, walnut oil, angelica liqueur, tourteau cheesecake, honey and goat cheese, you really are spoiled for choice. Guest comments: Dawn, David and Matthew : Just to say thank you for making us all so welcome at Chez Gabrielle. The gite, Jasmin, was just perfect - beautifully finished and so well supplied with everything a family could need on holiday. The surrounding area is lovely and so many places to see that 1 week was not really long enough. We will keep in touch and hope to see you again next summer. | How to get here |
On the Google Map we are 4km South East of the village of Nere which is in the center of the map. If you click on the + Zoom button twice - Fontaine Chalendray will appear. FLYING: We are just two hours from Bordeaux and Limoges airports, and around an hour and a quarter from Poitiers and La Rochelle airports, which are used by Ryanair, Flybe, EasyJet and BA. FERRIES: The closest ferry ports are St Malo about five hours drive time, Le Harve around five and a half hours, and Caen about six hours. Calais/Boulogne are much further north with a 9 hour drive this side. Our favoured route is via Portsmouth/Le Harve with LD Lines TRAINS: The TGV stops at Poitiers (1 hour), Ruffec (30 mins) and Angoulême (1 hour) and Standard rail stops at St Jean d'Angeley linking to TGV stations for onward travel. Example - St Jean d'Angeley to Paris in 3hrs !!! |
