OVERVIEW Chateau des Egrons is situated in the Gironde hills bordering the Lot-et-Garonne and the Dordogne, a beautiful location in the wine region of the South West. The historic bastide village of Duras is 6 minutes by car. This scenic area is known for its famous wines, fruit and market gardens. An outstanding championship golf course is within 12 minutes drive with sport, leisure and restaurant facilities. The Dordogne river is a short drive and has lots of water based activities. The local restaurants serve famous French dishes as well as simple farmhouse food. The local markets offer a wide selection of game, fish, wild mushrooms, homemade bread, cheeses, pates, hams, fruit and vegetables. Chateau des Egrons is available for the exclusive use of your party and can very comfortably accommodate eleven people. Catering can be arranged to a very high standard. THE CHATEAU GARDEN A tranquil and very private setting, the two and a half acre garden is surrounded by a clipped hedge. The large heated swimming pool (18ft x 36ft) has panoramic views from the poolside and shade under the nut trees. New Tennis Court. The 100ft terrace overlooks the South West garden so you can enjoy the sunsets across the valley. In May and June the area is full of wild flowers and the orchards are in full blossom. The grape picking season is late September/October when it can be as hot as July/August. If you are not restricted to school holiday periods May/June Sept/Oct is a beautiful time to visit the South West. THE BUILDING & ITS HISTORY The site dates back to Roman times while most of the building dates from the 15th century and is considered a local historic monument, with interesting features and signs of fortification from the 100 years war. Previous owners include the Marquis de Seville and the Duc de Duras. During the 16th century the Chateau is associated with the family of Paul Revere, the American patriot made famous in the poem by Longfellow. The accommodation is very spacious. All the rooms are large – lots of comfort and space for 10 or so people to enjoy. On very hot days it is cool and comfortable inside. The Chateau is for your exclusive use. The property is managed by a local resident who is British and who lives close to the Chateau; he is at hand to help. Cleaning is undertaken on Saturdays when bed linen and towels are changed. The courtyard (90ft x 90ft) is enclosed by sandstone buildings; a barn, stables, a loggia and two towers. The courtyard is gravelled and the entrance to the courtyard has large imposing gates and ornamental stone columns. The courtyard loggia is a perfect area for dining by candlelight. There are 6 separate places to eat – the front courtyard, the large kitchen table ( seats up to 14 ), the formal dining hall, the conservatory, under the loggia or on the rear terrace facing the pool. THE ACCOMODATION Chateau des Egrons is ideal for families or friends, sharing. The principal accommodation includes: Inner Sitting Room; with a beautiful stone fireplace; TV and video. Garden Room; newly renovated casual sitting room connecting the kitchen with the terrace overlooking the garden and pool. The terrace has stone tables and seating. Salon;formal sitting room with views over the South-West garden and countryside. Conservatory; also leading onto the garden and pool Formal Dining Hall Chinoise; grand room with a monumental open stone fireplace and an imposing dining table. The Kitchen; has seating around a very large table for up to 14. The kitchen is very large(52ft x 35ft) with exposed stone walls, overlooks the courtyard and the North garden. Very well equipped; built-in oven, gas hob, dishwasher and two fridges and an excellent batterie-de-cuisine. Laundry Room; with washing machine, iron and ironing board, clothes line and drying frame. SURROUNDING AREA The Chateau is 15 Kilometers from Ste- Foy- la- Grande between Bergerac and ST.Emilion. POOL Large private heated pool; child-safe solar powered security cover TENNIS New Private Tennis Court on site plus Badminton markings and net (plus volley-ball). BOULES & TABLE TENNIS In the courtyard; Chateau rules apply! Table Tennis on site in the South-East Tower GOLF Chateau des Vigiers is an excellent Golf and Country Club with a championship course and sport and leisure facilities including excellent restaurants. Château des Vigiers is 12 minutes by car from Chateau des Egrons. LOCAL ACTIVITIES Cooking Classes, wine and market tours can be arranged as part of your visit to the Chateau. DURAS The local village is a pretty arcaded bastide village 6km from the property, ideal for daily shopping. There are restaurants, bars, banks, bakers, butchers, super-market and petrol stations. The open air market is in the main suqare every Monday morning. The village is on a hill and the large Chateau de Duras is open to the public. MONSEGUR Another beautiful bastide village with good shopping just a few kilometres from Duras. Market day is on Friday and is held in the main square. SAINTE FOY-LA-GRANDE 20 minutes by car from the Chateau, an old town on the river Dordogne. There is an excellent market every Saturday morning. BERGERAC 35 minutes by car, the largest town on the river Dordogne and the centre of the region’s wine production. It has a beautiful restored old quarter, interesting architecture and a large shopping centre. There are two large markets (Saturday morning). Bergerac airport is very convienient MARMANDE 20 minutes by car. Another large Saturady market (mostly a farmer's market)and excellent shops. LAC ST SERNIN 6 minutes by car, it is hidden in the pine woods across the valley. A fresh-water lake with a sandy beach. The Chateau is an ideal place to explore and experience the whole region. |
