| Summary |
'Les Beaux Terroirs' is a collection of cottages and apartments, recently converted from 250-year old buildings on the edge of a village surrounded by the Rhone vineyards of southern France. With a brand new swimming pool and mature gardens, it's a perfect spot for a break any time of the year. 'Les Beaux Terroirs' is owned by Sam Owens. He bought the place in 2004 and has renovated it from top to bottom. Nothing gives him more pleasure than helping people escape their daily routine to spend time in beautiful parts of France. 'Les Beaux Terroirs' - what it means... Sam is also a complete wine nut and owns a small wine company. When deciding what to call the place, it obviously had to be connected with wine. 'Terroir' is a word for which there is no exact English translation, but roughly it implies 'a sense of place'. The thinking is that a wine is intrinsically imprinted with the character of the place it comes from - i.e. from the soils, the rocks, its orientation, its climate. 'Les Beaux Terroirs' hence means 'the beautiful terroirs'. The concept of terroir is anathema to those who believe that wine should become a standardised product just like Coca-Cola or the Big Mac. But terroir lies at heart of what makes wine such an endlessly fascinating and pleasurable interest and we should all champion it... |

Les Beaux Terroirs is a collection of cottages and apartments recently converted from 250 year-old buildings on the edge of a village surrounded by the Rhone vineyards of southern France. | Location |
NEW IN 2008 Organised programmes of activities in the Ardeche region, we have teamed up with our local activity specialist partners, Evasion Travel - from £129 per person (approx 190 Euro. ************************************* Kayaking/canoeing - either in the Ceze itself (10 mins walk from "Les Beaux Terroirs") or in the Ardeche Gorges, 30 mins away by car. There they do a 2 day descent where you camp out overnight by the river's edge and enjoy tales of daring escapes around a camp fire... River-swimming - head down by foot to the River Ceze to swim in clear pools and lol about on a lilo or dingy. Biking - either on road bikes to cover the kilometres in the style of Lance Armstrong, or on mountain bikes if you prefer to head off-road into the wilds. Pot-holing - at the famous Aven d-Orgnac caves 30 minutes away from St Andre. Canyoning - in the beautiful Chassezac gorges, approx 1hr 30 from us up in the Cevennes. Golf - at the Uzes course, 30 minutes from the house. Wine-Tasting - this is Rhone Valley heaven; if you like spicy wines made from Syrah/Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre, you'll be very happy indeed... Boules - do what every old boy in the south of France does and clank a few boules while you sup a glass of Pastis. VISITS - If you like to visit and see new places when on hols, don't miss out on some of these lovely places.... Uzes - beautiful market town about 30 mins away, founded by the Duche d'Uzes in the 12th century - don't miss the Saturday morning market. Haribo Sweets Museum - a must-see for any families with younger kiddies, the famous old Haribo sweets factory has an excellent museum/shop, just south of Uzes. Avignon - one of France's great artistic and cultural cities (with its month-long culturefest in August), it used to be home to the popes (see their massive papal palace by the river) and has the half-finished bridge that gave rise to the famous "Sur le pont d'Avignon...." song. THE AREA The village of St Andre de Roquepertuis lies in the Ceze Valley in the Gard Department. It's like a little outcrop of Provence on the western banks of the Rhone. The valley is gently undulating and covered in vines, fruit trees, woodlands, lavender fields and ancient villages. The river Ceze runs down the middle , providing pools for swimming in, rapids to kayak through and waterfalls to gasp at. St Andre lies at the western end of the valley, just before it rises through the Gorges de la Ceze and off towards the Cevennes. It sits on a shallow hill, protected from the worst of the Mistral wind by a ridge to its immediate north and is surrounded by vineyards. LOCAL FACILITIES There is a cafe/bar/restaurant in St Andre with a lovely terrace (about 300m from the house). You can order your bread here for the following morning. The village is also served by a fantastic travelling butcher (try his chipolatas...). 3km away is the village of Goudarges, which offers a wide range of restaurants, shops and services (including a bank, pharmacy and doctors). 15km away is Bagnols-sur-Ceze, a good sized town with larger supermarkets, a hospital and all major services. The Ceze valley remains relatively unspoilt - especially when compared to the better-known areas of the Luberon and Ventoux to the East of the Rhone. Let's hope it stays that way... |
